Organising a yoga retreat always starts with the same question: where? The venue is half the battle. You need peace and quiet, space, light – a place where participants feel cut off from everyday life the moment they arrive. The Château de la Huberdière, in Touraine, hosts yoga retreats and wellness courses on a private estate, including enclosed grounds.

Here’s what we’ve learnt from organising these holidays, and what really matters to an organiser.

Choosing a venue for a yoga retreat

A good yoga retreat needs three things: a spacious practice area, comfortable rooms, and silence. The rest is just a bonus. La Huberdière brings these three elements together in a single location, which saves on travel and keeps the group together.

The estate is entirely private. You are not staying in a hotel shared with other guests: the château, its reception rooms and grounds are all yours for the duration of the course. Details regarding capacity and organisation can be found on the [retreat] page (/retraite).

A peaceful château in the heart of Touraine

The château is set within a walled, wooded park in Nazelles-Négron, near Amboise. Here, you can hear the wind in the trees, not the sound of traffic. It is this silence that allows a meditation session or a morning workout to take centre stage.

The Touraine region adds its mild climate and the landscapes of the Loire Valley. Between sessions, participants take a stroll in the park, read in the sunshine, or head off to the nearby banks of the Loire.

Venues, accommodation and catering

When it comes to a workshop, logistics are key. The château offers spacious rooms for practical sessions, accommodation for the group on site, and home-cooked meals served at the château.

Meals are just as important as yoga on a retreat. I prepare seasonal dishes, which can be adapted to vegetarian or gluten-free diets, using produce from the market and the vegetable garden. Full details of the meals can be found on the meals page.

Staying, practising and eating all in one place changes the experience: the group doesn’t split up, and the course runs smoothly from morning to night.

Yoga, meditation, workshops

The venue is ideal for all forms of gentle activity. Whether it’s yoga, meditation, sophrology, writing workshops or creative courses, the setting is perfect for concentration and relaxation. The lounges are used for sessions on cooler days, whilst the grounds are perfect for outdoor activities once the weather improves.

Several organisers return year after year. That is the best indication that a venue has found its place in the retreat calendar.
