Where should you go for a romantic weekend near Amboise?
The Loire Valley remains the safest bet for a romantic weekend in France, and the Amboise area is its geographical heart. The royal château, the Clos Lucé, Chenonceau and Chaumont-sur-Loire all sit within thirty minutes, without ever rejoining the motorway.
La Huberdière stands at Nazelles-Négron, directly opposite Amboise on the other bank of the Loire. You are 2 hrs 20 from Paris by car and 30 minutes from the Saint-Pierre-des-Corps TGV station. Our advice for a weekend away as a couple: one base, and you travel out from it. Changing hotel every night spoils half the pleasure, and the other half goes into the suitcases.
Day 1: arrive early and plan nothing
The best decision of a weekend for two is to arrive late on Friday afternoon and plan nothing before dinner. It is the one moment of the stay when you can genuinely slow down, and it is the one most couples give up.
You drop the bags, push the shutters open, and the park does the rest. From April to October the heated pool is in service: you swim as the light drops over the Vouvray slopes, with nobody around. The rest of the year there is a fire in the drawing room and two armchairs waiting for precisely this.
If you are coming from Paris by train, plan on a car from Saint-Pierre-des-Corps. The estate is in the countryside, which is the whole point, but the châteaux cannot be reached on foot.
Dinner in the evening, without getting back in the car
The real luxury of a romantic weekend at a château is dining on site and going up to bed ten metres later. Every evening except Sunday, we serve generous sharing boards made from market and kitchen garden produce.
I am Italian, and on Thursday evenings dinner is entirely Italian, fresh pasta included. It is the meal that comes up most often in what our guests tell us afterwards, and that is no accident: we cook here the way you cook at home, not the way a hotel restaurant does. A couple who dine at the estate gain two hours on a couple who drive back into town looking for a table, look for another because the first is full, and then drive home. Those two hours are the weekend.
Day 2: the Loire châteaux, just the two of you
Two châteaux in one day, not three: that is the rule that separates a break from a route march. Beyond that, you visit with one eye on your watch and come home more tired than you left.

If you were to keep only one for a first weekend together, take Chenonceau in the morning at opening, before the coaches. The Vouvray vineyards, the stop couples forget
The Vouvray vineyard starts literally at the end of the park, and it is the most underrated stop of a romantic weekend in Touraine. The cellars are cut into the tuffeau stone, tastings happen without ceremony, and the winemakers take their time.
Vouvray and Montlouis-sur-Loire fill half a day, slotted between two château visits. You will find dry chenins and sparkling wines that hold their own against many champagnes, at prices that bear no comparison. Count on one cellar, two at most: nobody remembers the third.
Which room should you choose for a weekend for two?

What budget for a romantic weekend at a château?
For two people, a romantic weekend at a charming château usually falls between 150 and 300 euros a night. The price depends on the room, the season and the length of the stay.
To that, add dinner on site and monument entries, around twenty euros per person per château. A full weekend for two, two nights, two dinners and three visits, stays well below the cost of the same escape in a city-centre hotel, where a restaurant table has to be added every evening. Which season should you choose for a break for two?
September and October are the two best months for a romantic weekend in the Loire Valley, and nobody says it often enough. The vines turn red, the pool stays warm until the end of September, and you can cross the walkways of Chenonceau without using your elbows.
Spring has the gardens of Villandry and Chaumont in a soft light. Winter has absolute quiet, a fire in the drawing room and gentler rates: it is also the season when couples come to look the place over for something bigger, and we describe that in our article on winter weddings at the château.
